Reports are circulating Nvidia is considering price drops
for a number of its high-end graphics cards. The price reductions are rumoured
to be coming into place in markets outside of the United States, with Nvidia
keen to reduce the price disparity between the territories, which has seen 1:1
conversion rates or worse when picking up cards in the UK or Europe.
Despite AMD having a far smaller slice of the graphics card
pie than Nvidia in recent years, its comparable graphics cards have
consistently been coming in at cheaper prices. Nvidia is looking to decrease
its prices in order to make its GeForce range an even more competitive choice
for high-end PC gamers.
Certainly the prices are something which needs to be
addressed. The $1000 GTX Titan X hit the UK and Europe for £920 and EUR 1205,
the equivalent of $1,443 and $1,344 respectively.
If the reports are correct and Nvidia does indeed do this,
it puts AMD in an extremely precarious position. Not only is AMD firmly in
second place in the graphics card market, but it’s seen its current Radeon R300
series met with a muted response. This hasn’t been entirely helped by its Radeon
R9 Fury X graphics cards. The initial benchmarks for these hit yesterday,
indicating performance significantly less than of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti,
despite both having recommended selling prices of $650.
Do you think it’s about time prices were brought down in
line with US prices? If Nvidia successfully undercuts AMD, can you see a market
for the Radeon cards?
