You may have noticed a little while back that a particularly
fervent Fallout fan had been amassing a fairly staggering collection of over
2200 bottle caps, with the intention of sending them over to Bethesda as
payment for his copy of Fallout 4. The bottle caps were collected over a period
of around 7 years, which is actually less than a beer a day. The box of more
than 2000 bottle caps weighed in at 11.2 pounds, which he then shipped to
Maryland for an undisclosed sum (read: a lot).
Anyway, Bethesda’s global community lead manager, Matt
Grandstaff, confirmed via his Twitter page that the published had received the
gigantic box of a caps a couple of days ago. Seth, the cap hoarder, has since
seen his request for a copy of Fallout 4 honoured, and he’ll be receiving it on
PC come November 10th.
Within the Fallout games bottle caps are used as a form of
currency. Post the ‘Great War’, bottle caps were noted for their relatively
scarcity, becoming the ideal currency across the wastelands. The technology
required to create and paint them had been all but lost, making them difficult
to counterfeit, becoming the standard form of currency in all Fallout games.
This was all pretty successful for Seth, who's nabbed
himself a 'free' copy of Fallout 4 for his efforts. It's a nice gesture from
Bethesda and Matt Grandstaff said he'll be receiving the game for being the
first person to do this. It doesn't sound as if this is a trick that's going to
work twice, if you were thinking of downing 2,240 bottles of booze between now
and November 10th; no mean feat.
