Vertigo Games has announced zombie shooter Arizona Sunshine,
a VR experience created for the HTC Vive and Steam VR. Pitched as a
‘room-scale’ shooter, Arizona Sunshine has the player fending off the zombie
apocalypse with motion-controlled weapon handling and fast-paced shooting.
We're in the early days of virtual reality, and it looks as
if Arizona Sunshine will constrict things a little via the room-space mechanic,
whereby you’re tied down to a specific spot and forced to make use of the
weapons and cover available in your immediate vicinity. It also means you’ll
have a fair bit of real-time movement within that spot, so you’ll be able to
physically dodge attacks and crouch around corners for lining up shots. Excuse
me a second while I just insure my priceless Ming vases...
Build from the ground up as a dedicated VR experience,
Arizona Sunshine is going to be split into bite-sized chunks, each offering a
different zombie experience, one of which you can see in the trailer below.
can’t be the only one to get a little bit of a thrill when
the Steam VR logo pops up. It’s real and it’s all actually happening later this
year, and it’s going to be fascinating to see what experiences crop up in and
around its launch. Initially, at least, we’re sure to see smaller-scale
experiences like this become commonplace. The hardware demands of VR
necessitate smaller spaces, so it’s going to be a while until massive,
open-world titles with eye-popping visuals.
VR's coming in an official capacity later this year, will
you be hopping on board? What do you make of Arizona Sunshine? Are experiences
like this enough, or will VR need more big-hitting titles?
