By now practically every classic RPG has got a spiritual
successor out in some shape or form. Except, that is, for Planescape
Torment. inXile Entertainment has been hard at work on Torment:
Tides of Numenera for a while now, following a Kickstarter
campaign which saw it raise more than $4 million back in March, 2013.
The Wasteland 2 developer
has now released a new trailer for Torment: Tides of Numenera, showing off the
spiritual successor to Black Isle Studios’ 1999 cult classic role-playing game.
The video explores the Ninth World in which Torment is set, and it’s sporting
that classic up-ressed Infinity Engine look which made Pillars of
Eternity such a looker.
I have to say, the world itself looks fantastic, and packed
with imagination. There’s suspended water cubes and mysterious artifacts, all
with a organic, alien feel.
inXile’s certainly spinning a few plates at the moment, with
Torment: Tides of Numenera, The Bard’s
Tale IV, and a console version of Divinity:
Original Sin in the works. Torment is pencilled in for a Q4 2015
launch, with an Early Access version expected before then, in a similar manner
to Wasteland 2’s staggered launch.
Looking forward to this RPG with a heavy nod to the past?
Can it match the success of Pillars of Eternity?
