Contrary to previous Star Wars Battlefront titles, and
DICE’s own Battlefield series, the upcoming third title in the Star Wars
Battlefront series will not feature player classes or squads.
Squads have become a mainstay of Battlefield, allowing small
groups of players to form sub-teams for performance-related perks and targeted
objectives. This has been scrapped in favour of a buddy system; two players can
team up together, with a spawn point available on their partner. As part of the
buddy system the two players will actually share unlocks and XP gain. Any
weapon the first player has unlocked will be available to the second, and vice
versa.
Classes have also been done away with entirely, instead Star
Wars Battlefront offers full player loadout customisation, in a similar to the
Call of Duty series. Weapons and gadgets will be unlockable via experience
points, with a full progression and unlock system.
"We allow you to create your own loadout,"
said Craig Mcleod, Star Wars Battlefront producer. Players can their tailor
their equipment to their playing style, whether that’s running and gunning,
long-distance sniping, or defending your teammates.
Whatever your thoughts on this, it certainly appears as if
we aren’t just getting a reskinned Battlefield game. We already know
third-person camera will be the standard, and there will be no opportunities to
aim down sights of weapons.
What do you make of the direction DICE is heading with Star
Wars Battlefront? Are you a fan of dropping squads and classes? Let us know!
