Blizzard
are a whole lot of things, but groundbreakers they are not. Practically
everything they’ve done has been done before, but they cherry pick the best
bits and create an absolutely slick greatest hits package. Case in point, World
of Warcraft, which singlehandedly wiped practically every subscription-based
MMO off the map.
So when Blizzard announces it’s finally having a crack at
first-person-shooter, the world sits up and takes notice. Precious little has
been seen of team-based shooter Overwatch since
its reveal last year, but now we’ve got a brand new eight-minute gameplay demo
detailing how Zenyatta the omnic monk plays.
Zenyatta seems to eschew traditional weaponry in favour of a
long-ranged orb attack emitting from his hands. It seems along with damaging
foes he can also place protective shields up for others, and perform healing.
The video is a complete, unedited match from Overwatch,
played on the King’s Row map set in England.
Overwatch is scheduled for a late 2015 closed beta, so
expect the full game to arrive in 2016. Has Blizzard got a Team Fortress 2
beater on its hands?
