TheWitcher 3 developer CD Projekt RED and online retailer Green Man
Gaming have been getting into a bit of ruckus, engaging in a public falling out
over the distribution of the eagerly anticipated RPG.
CDPR’s business development manager Rafal Jaki took to The
Witcher 3’s forums to warn fans not to buy The Witcher 3 from Green Man Gaming.
The digital distributor is currently offering a fairly hefty 35% discount on
Wild Hunt, available for $20.99/£17.50 cheaper than the recommended retail
price used by other sellers, undercutting the price of CDPR's GOG.com in the
process.
"I would kindly ask our fans no to buy via GMG at
this time. We had not sold them Keys and don't know the origin of them,"
said Jaki.
In response GMG CEO Paul Sulyok explained CDPR “chose not
to engage with a number of significant, reputable, and successful retailers,
including ourselves, as they instead focused on supporting their own platform
GOG.”
Having attempted to negotiate a deal for the past six
months, Sulyok and GMG then made the decision to indirectly get hold of The
Witcher 3 and sell it on from there, evidently at a cheaper price. It’s unclear
at the moment exactly where these keys have come from, with GMG remaining
tight-lipped.
"We have worked with GMG in the past for W2 and they
were a legit partner,” CDPR’s Jaki said. "We control all digital and
the codes, and because we decided not to sell keys to GMG it came as a surprise
that they are doing a special promo without buying keys from us. We have
reached out to ask for the source of the keys but up until now there was no
response.
“They might sell Nvidia keys (which are not to be sold
but gifted with the Nvidia promo), or they just bought keys from GOG just like
a regular customer and now they resell them with a loss (we cannot prevent
anyone from selling something).”
Green Man Gaming has long made a name for itself distancing
its business from some of the shadier key resellers out there, some of which
are offering The Witcher 3 for as little as £15 in the run up to launch. As it
stands GMG shows no signs of budging, but we suspect this isn’t the last we’ll
hear of this.

there? Do you grab your games from the
